Tracey Takes On... the 1999 Emmys

Once again, the Emmy nominations have been very good to Tracey and TTO.  The series captured eight nominations this year, along with a nomination for Tracey for her work on Ally McBeal.  How many will they win?  Find out on August 28 (the non-televised awards ceremony) and September 12 (prime-time telecast).

Commentary

Nominations: The nominations are very similar to 1998's, with the exception of directing (yes in 98, no this year) and guest performance (no in 98, but yes this year).  I see that TTO received two nominations for outstanding art direction; might this lead to some votes canceling each other out?  We shall see.  I am gratified to see that Tracey did get a nod for her role as Ally McBeal's unconventional therapist; personally, I think she should have got one last year.  She has the potential to personally win three Emmys this year (two for acting and one for executive producing TTO).

Awards: I thought Tracey would have been nominated last year for her work on Ally McBeal.  No matter; she got the nomination AND the win this year!  This should make seven Emmys for her to this point; Dinah Shore is the only woman to have more. Performance: When viewing the clips for each performance during the ceremony, I got the impression that John Leguizamo was going to win, and he did.  I didn't see his special, but judging from the clips, he seemed to be a worthy winner.  Series:  Dave wins for the second year in the row -- bummer. Side note:  a couple of Tracey alums (Jay Kogen from TTUS and Thomas Schlamme from TTO) won Emmys for writing and directing, respectively.  Helen Mirren, who played Hope's professor in a third-season sketch, also picked up an Emmy. Congratulations to them!

Congratulations to Tracey and the entire TTO staff.
