The third video from Tracey Takes On... is now
available: Fern & Kay. Unlike the first two videos, which were
compilations of three episodes each, this video includes sketches from several episodes,
all featuring either Fern Rosenthal, brassy Long Island Jew, or Kay Clark, long-suffering,
stoically enduring caregiver to her ailing mother. The video is divided into two 24-minute segments, one featuring Fern and the other featuring Kay. If you are a regular TTO viewer, you will recognize these sketches as coming from the first season (Fern at Harry's bedside after his heart attack and the charity gala, and Kay meeting Carlos and the exiled Albanian king). One treat: the very first Fern sketch, which originally aired in 1993 as part of the special Tracey Ullman Takes On New York. The other Kay sketch comes from the third season (she marries the condemned prisoner). One caveat: the sketches have been edited from their original length, presumably to fit in the 24-minute time period. Perhaps these will be broadcast in this form in the future. Everyone who's a Tracey fan will enjoy the sketches, but the main audience for the tape seems to be the casual fan or the fan who doesn't have HBO and thus hasn't seen the new series. Hardcore fans, who are likely to have recorded each episode as it was originally broadcast, have little incentive to buy the tape, as there is nothing they don't already have (except for Tracey's introduction to each sketch). Perhaps future tapes could include some bonus material, such as bloopers or outtakes, or even sketches that were cut prior to broadcast. Certainly such material would be very desirable if TTO was ever to become available on laserdisc or DVD. NOTE: The tape may be difficult to find in video stores but should be easily available at online retailers such as Amazon.com. -- Roger Reini, Jan. 30 1999 Page written by Roger
